23andMe: Ancestry Detail Update

Background
For one of 23andMe’s biggest ancestry product updates, I curated and wrote over one hundred snapshot stories highlighting different places of interest, recipes, holidays, untranslatable words, and more from 23andMe’s thirty three populations.

Problem to solve
These snapshot stories were brought to life as a result of a common customer refrain: “I’ve gotten my ancestry results — now what?” Through food, travel, and music stories, I helped create an inspiring experience within 23andMe’s Ancestry product that helps customers sample just a few of the many nuances that make these populations unique.

Approach
One important part of this project was making it clear to customers that their ancestry is not the same as their identity, and vice versa. My goal was to tell inspiring stories in a thoughtful and sensitive way. First, I pulled on the diverse perspectives and experiences within 23andMe’s internal focus groups for this project. I then used key insights from our user testing sessions to adjust the tone and feel of these stories.
